a dash of physics, a pinch of life, and a cinnamon stick

would you like some Banoffee pie with that?

Welcome Post!!

Though I doubt many people are reading this, to the few people who are, HI.  \o/ THANKS FOR STOPPING BY.

So to reiterate account bio that people may or may not have seen...

The task?

"Your year-long task is to write an online PHYSICS JOURNAL (a blog) where you can keep record of your life experiences as viewed from the eye and mind of a physics-literate person (YOU). Each written entry will document a single instance in which you witnessed, performed, or experienced good physics. It may involve something broad, like a football game you attended, something exciting, like a sky dive, or something subtle and mundane, like brushing your hair."

The contender?

Me, Vicky, darling (if you're teou), Vicksy, any other nicknames that I have.

The result?

Hopefully a good grade in Physics.

And well, that's all, really.  Well, all minus the random flailing, fangirling, ranting that may pop up throughout this blog.  But that's a horse of different color.

So I have one of those cool vibrating massage thingies that you can buy at places like Brookstone.  And for some reason (I am guessing for aesthetic purposes), it is coated with this nice, shiny, reflective surface.  Since the massage thingy is sort of curved and rounded outward, it acts as a convex mirror.  So in these photos, you can see my surroundings (my dining room) and me as virtual images.  The cool thing about such curved mirrors is that the images come out looking funny and skewed, hehehe.  So in between moaning about my aching back (the world is not a happy place for me right now) and massaging it, I like to look at my weird reflection.

NEW ITOUCH = HAPPINESS.  ECSTASY.  BLISS.

As my finger moves across the screen of my lovely, lovely new iPod touch, it does work.  Work is defined as force multiplied by displacement.  My finger applies some force (very minimal because right now I'm treating my itouch like the Holy Grail and being very careful with it) as it touches my itouch.  Obviously, there is displacement when my finger moves (e.g., while playing a game because itouch apps are kind of really addictive).  Thus, work is done by my finger, though my mother would beg to differ.

Looking back at my drawing though, I'm beginning to think I should have used a different color to draw the hand.  Orange skin just makes me think of Evan Lysacek....  (.____.);;

FAILURE AT LIFE.

Since we're starting review, I thought I might return to an older topic: Kinematics.

Clearly, physics and I are not attuned to each other because I absolutely fail at Fair games.  My ball's trajectory (which should be a parabolic arc but isn't because I am not that talented and skillful with any drawing tool) due to kinematics is short of the targets.  Because I don't provide enough initial velocity, the ball reaches the ground as the force of gravity acts on it downwards before it can get anywhere near the targets.  It is quite sad and depressing and, well, sad.

Fortunately, I don't care enough about fair prizes because I have Nicholas Hoult:

Okay, so I don't have Nicholas Hoult.  I do have several gorgeous pictures of him looking amazing and wonderful and ridiculously attractive saved on my computer in a giant folder named "LOVE" with all the different pictures sorted and nested into tiny folders by photoshoot/date.

I never said that I wasn't obsessed.  :D

I love physics.  It is because of physics that I am able to easily see Hugh Grant and Nicholas Hoult's faces filling up my TV screen on whim.  All I have to do is pop in a DVD and press play.

DVD's work because of their many tiny, itty-bitty, little diffraction gratings.  The laser within whatever is reading the disc (i.e., the DVD player) hits the diffraction gratings.  If the rays hit just land or just pits (who came up with these names?) then there is constructive interference.  If the rays hit half on land and half on a pit then there is destructive interference.  The result of the diffraction?

From here on out, nothing pertains to physics. )

Electromagnetic waves are wonderful things.  The only waves we can see are those in the range of visible light (well, duh).  Light of different wavelengths result in the different colors that we see.  In this picture of dyed Easter eggs, the eggs reflect light of specific wavelengths which result in our ability to see the eggs in all these pretty colors.  For example, light waves with wavelengths ranging from 450-495 nm appears blue to the human eye (or at least it does, according to wikipedia).  Thus, those two blue eggs must reflect light with wavelengths between that range.

(i don't think you can really see it in this picture but on the blue egg on the top, I drew Merlin!!  XD)

So, I, like many people am myopic, or nearsighted.  To correct this, I wear glasses which are basically diverging lenses.  Such lenses create an image at my retina by making it so that the rays hitting my eye do not meet too soon in front of my retina.
